Oily Skin Treatment for Men: How to Control Shine and Breakouts

If you’re reading this, your skin isn’t dry or sensitive—it’s oily. And, not that we’re mindreaders, but you probably also have a lot of questions about men’s oily skin care because you want to look and feel your best.

We don’t blame you. And we’ve got your back—as well as the rest of your skin.

Understanding oily skin in men.

Your pores might seem like the obvious culprit, but oily skin is actually caused by what’s beneath them: sebaceous glands. The oil those glands produce—sebum—is good for you. But as the saying goes, too much of a good thing…

To some extent, how much sebum your glands produce on the daily is based on luck-of-the-draw: genetics and hormones. Not things you can control.

But we’re here to talk about things you can control. That way, you can establish a sustainable and effective men's oily skin care routine.

Aside from genetics and hormones, here’s what else can contribute to oily skin:,

  • Food – Stuff that’s already bad for you, like sugar? It’s bad for your skin, too.

  • Season and location – Heat and humidity can boost sebum production in the interest of hydration, but the road to breakouts is paved with oil.

  • Poor skincare – This is the big one. Even if you adjust your diet and set the thermostat just right, the wrong skincare product can reverse all your hard-earned progress.

We bet reversing all that hard-earned progress isn’t on your menu—not when oily skin often feels as unpleasant as it looks. The redness, the greasiness, the flaking—no one needs those confidence killers. Which is why oily skin treatment for men is on our menu.

The main course? Our suggested routine. Bon appétit.

Daily routine for oily skin care in men.

Step one: Oily skin men need to cleanse both morning and night. Oil builds up when you sleep, so this is crucial. It’s equally crucial not to over-dry your skin afterward. If you do, your sebaceous glands will go into overdrive.

To help prevent that from happening in the first place, we’d say step two is even more crucial: moisturize. Look for lightweight, water-based solutions; anything heavier will work against you.

Last but not least, apply sunscreen—even on cloudy days. The best ones for oily skin won’t clog your pores; those that do can lead to pimples, which are the last thing you need.

When you hear the word sunscreen, you might think of creamy lotions (unless you’re a spray guy). However, these alternatives will do you one better:

  • Gels

  • Powders

  • Matte finish

While nailing your daily routine is a big win, men's skin care for oily skin doesn’t end there. Let’s check out treatments next.

Effective oily skin treatments for men.

Since oily skin is a pore problem, the natural solution is one that clears your pores and keeps them unclogged: exfoliation.

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin. The process also helps get rid of excess sebum. We encourage you to exfoliate at least twice a week, but no more than three times a week. Why?

When your skin senses that it’s lost too much sebum, it strives to produce even more. So go easy on the scrubbing.

Aside from exfoliating, we also highly recommend using oil-control products. Be on the lookout for ones that feature these ingredients:

  • Titanium dioxide and zinc dioxide

  • Glycerin

  • Niacinamide (AKA Vitamin B3)

  • Hyaluronic and salicylic acid

  • Kaolin clay

Nighttime skincare for oily skin.

Your daytime skincare routine keeps you looking fresh. But since your face inevitably gets dirty as you go about your day, men's face care for oily skin at night is geared toward restoring balance. When the sun goes down, it’s your job to tip the scales back in your favor.

As during the day, it’s important to cleanse and moisturize. But there are three additional steps to add to your nighttime skincare routine:

  1. After cleansing, exfoliate. You’re already an expert on this one.

  2. After exfoliating, apply oil-control products, whether you jive with glycerin or niacinamide.

  3. Once a week (after moisturizing), wear a clay mask. It might sound weird, but you’ll appreciate its oil-absorbing properties.

If your skin is irritated, add a toner with aloe vera to the list. And as far as acne is concerned, salicylic acid will nip pimples in the bud.
